Tallow has become a bit of a buzzword in the natural skincare world lately, but the truth is, it’s nothing new. Long before shelves were filled with complicated ingredients and products promising miracle results, tallow was being used to nourish and protect the skin. It’s simple, traditional, and for many people, it’s a welcome return to skincare that doesn’t need a science degree to understand.
At its core, tallow is rendered beef fat. While that might not sound particularly glamorous, it’s naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E and K, along with fatty acids that are remarkably similar to those found in our own skin. Because of this, many people find tallow deeply moisturising and gentle, especially for dry or sensitive skin. Rather than sitting on the surface, it’s readily absorbed and helps support the skin’s natural barrier.
But here’s the thing, not all tallow is created equal.
Just because a label says “grass-fed” or “100% tallow” doesn’t tell you the whole story. In the same way we care about where our meat, honey or olive oil comes from, it’s worth asking a few questions about the ingredients we’re putting on our skin too. Where was it sourced? Is it traceable? Can the maker tell you exactly what’s in it? Has it been carefully rendered and thoughtfully made?
We think those things matter.
At Hearth & Hide, our tallow starts right here in the Mackenzie Country. The cattle are raised on Cloudy Peaks Station, and the tallow is rendered by us. Knowing exactly where our ingredients come from means we can stand behind every jar we make. There’s no mystery, no hidden ingredients, and no importing products from halfway around the world when we have incredible resources right here in New Zealand.
We also believe that just because something is natural doesn’t automatically make it better. Quality matters. Traceability matters. And transparency matters. If you’re choosing tallow skincare, it’s worth taking the time to understand who made it and where it came from.
The skincare world moves quickly. Every few months there seems to be a new ingredient everyone is talking about, promising to be the answer to all our skin concerns. But sometimes the old ways still hold their own. There’s something refreshing about going back to basics and using products with ingredients you can actually recognise.
Maybe that’s why so many people are rediscovering tallow.
Not because it’s trendy, but because it’s simple. Honest. And for generations before us, it just made sense.
And perhaps that’s what we need a little more of these days, less chasing the next big thing, and more understanding what we’re using, where it comes from, and why it matters in the first place.
From paddock to product, we believe good skincare starts with good ingredients and knowing exactly where they come from. 🤎
